Week 4 - 5E Model

This week, I learned about the 5Es (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate) and how they can be applied in the classroom. I can relate this to my prior knowledge because some parts are similar to inquiry-based learning and student-centered teaching. I found the "engage" phase super clear as it introduces the topics and sparks curiosity. I can apply the 5E model to my future teaching by using it to design my lessons and ensure that all 5Es are incorporated. Including this model in my future teaching will help me make my lessons more engaging and creative.

Reflection Questions:

a. What happens during the engage phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the engage phase?

During the engage phase, the teacher asks the students questions about honeybees to pique their curiosity about the topic and learn how much background knowledge they already have. This relates to the function of the engage phase, as it helps the students become more interested and ready to explore and learn more about the topic.

b. What happens during the explore phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the explore phase?

During the exploration phase, the students were divided into two groups to read the articles, take notes, and discuss their findings about ant colonies and honeybee hives. This phase allowed the students to gather information and construct their findings or questions collaboratively.

c. What happens during the explain phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the explain phase?

During the explain phase, the students discuss what they learned and compare and contrast their understandings with their classmates. They also gather in a circle to make connections between ants and honeybees. This relates to the function of the explain phase because they share with the class and discuss to clarify and deepen their learning.

d. What happens during the elaborate phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the elaborate phase?

During the elaborate phase, the students returned to their original groups to create a creative presentation of their choice about ants or honeybees. This relates to the function because they were encouraged to apply their knowledge in a creative way to deepen their understanding. They also extended their learning by presenting to the class and sharing with their peers.

e. What happens during the evaluate phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the evaluate phase?

During the evaluation phase, the students gave their presentations to the class, which the teacher recorded so she could later grade them. This relates to the function because it allows the students to share their understanding of the concepts they have learned.

f. Is the lesson "How do the social interactions and group behavior of ants and honey help to maintain their colonies?" a good example of a 5E lesson? Why or why not?

Yes, this is a good example of a 5E lesson because it was written clearly and thoughtfully, showing every step of the 5E's in detail. Each phase builds upon the previous one to ensure the students get the knowledge and apply it creatively.

Performance Expectation: Construct an argument that some animals form groups that help members survive.

SEP: Engaging in Argument from Evidence

CCC: Cause and Effect

DCI: Social Interactions and Group Behavior

  1. Hi Audrey! I enjoyed reading your post this week and hearing your thoughts on the 5E model of science instruction. I thought this was particularly valuable to learn about as future teachers to help our students develop a stronger science understanding. It is also easy to understand and implement, I agree that the engage phase was especially easy to understand. Similar to you, I plan on using this model of instruction in my future classroom to make my lessons more engaging and creative. Great post!

  2. Audrey,
Thanks for sharing your experience with the 5E module for instruction! I resonated with your feelings about how it affects science education. I also liked the summary that was provided for us and the examples of using vs. not alining with it. I think that by using this model, students will be able to question more and gain a deeper understanding. Have a great week 5!

  3. Hi Audrey! I enjoyed reading your response this week to the 5E module for instruction. This can be so valuable for us as teachers and I agree that the student-centered style can be very valuable. I had similar responses to the 5E reflection questions and am looking forward to seeing how they will be involved in teaching in the future.
